Since this is probably a hectic time time for you, we thought we
would list a few general items which you may need to know about in order
to better settle you into your new home as well as the neighborhood.

License Tag
Georgia tags must be purchased within 30 days
after establishing residency. You need the
following information with you:
1. Title of car, name and address of lienholder,
or copy of lease agreement; 2. Current tag
registration; 3. Mileage reading of vehicle; 4.
Valid insurance card. Liability coverage insurance
is required by Georgia law and an insurance
identification card must be in your possession when
you drive.
You will pay approximately $20 for your tag plus
an ad valorem tax (property tax) at the time the
license tag is issued.
Certificate of emission: In DeKalb County all
gas-burning vehicles (1981- present) must be
checked for emission standards every two years.
Non-gas-burning vehicles, diesel trucks and

Driver's License
Out-of-state drivers have 30 days to obtain a
Georgia driver's license. To purchase your license
you need the following:
1. Previous driver's license or two pieces of
identification; 2. A written exam based on Georgia
road laws; 3. An eye exam at the time the license
is issued; 4. A $15 fee, IN CASH.

| Based on assessed valuation of 40% of fair market
value; may be paid in one payment between July 1st and August
15th or two installments, due August 15 and November 15th.
Returns and applications foe exemption must be filed between
January 2nd and April 2nd, in the office of the Tax
Commissioner. Exemptions: Homestead, granted to residents
who own and occupy a home on January 1 and file application
prior to April 1. Senior Citizen: Residents older than 62
who meet financial requirements may also be eligible for the
Elderly Homestead Exemption. Residents over 70 years of
age and who meet other financial requirements may also be eligible
for the Special School Tax Emption. The exemption is based
on assessment with details available at the time of filing. Property

Pickup provided by county (404-294-2900)
Household Garbage - Pickups are on Monday and Thursday and
billed quarterly. Do not put trash in street. Cans
may be placed at the curb after 5 pm the night before
pickup and must be removed by 7 pm the day of pickup.
Aluminum cans in bags will be picked up on the first pickup each
week. Newspapers in separate paper bags will be collected
the second pickup. Aluminum cans can also be dropped
off at the fire station behind Peachtree Middle School so that
the proceeds go to the burn centers.
Yard Trimmings - Yard trimming will be picked up on Tuesday
on the Peachtree St. side and Friday on the Tilly Mill Side of
the neighborhood. Containers for yard waste many be 20 to
40 gallon plastic or metal cans clearly marked yard
trimmings. Local merchants carry biodegradable 20 or 40
gallon paper bags for this purpose. Trimmings from
trees, grass or plants, leaves, pine straw and grass clippings
must be separated from household garbage.
Tree Limbs - Tree limbs under 4 inches in diameter must be
shorter than 4 feet, limbs over 4 inches in diameter must be cut
in 2 to 2 1/2 foot sections. All limbs must be stacked
neatly at the curb. You will be charged for trees cut by
professional tree cutters
Special Pickups - For pickup of large items, appliances and
dead animals call (404) 294-2900 after the items are at the
curb. Building material, dirt, rocks, concrete products,
automobile bodies, and tires will not be picked up. You
may carry them to one of the County Disposal Facilities, call
(404) 294-2900.
Elderly Pickups - Elderly or infirm residents of DeKalb
County may apply for back door pickup. You must have a
doctor's statement and apply through the Sanitation Department.
